Shape the Future of Textile Claims: Weigh In on the Materials Matter Policy Draft
2025-02-06

Textile Exchange is thrilled to announce the initiation of a public consultation regarding the draft Materials Matter Claims and Labeling Policy. This is a golden opportunity for all stakeholders to have their voices heard in shaping an essential policy within their standards framework.

The Materials Matter Claims and Labeling Policy (MM-POL-301-V1) serves as a crucial guide, offering clear-cut requirements and guidelines for entities aiming to communicate about Materials Matter certification and certified products. Developed in tandem with the Materials Matter Standard, it ensures harmony and constructs a more robust, trustworthy system for making claims.

While some elements from the existing Standards Claims Policy (TE-301-V1.3) will endure, the new draft ushers in significant updates. These changes are designed to create a system that is not only more robust and credible but also user-friendly. Here are the key improvements:

New Claims Categories:

Fresh claim categories have been introduced, expanding the scope of communication possibilities.

Streamlined and Higher Minimum Content Thresholds:

The minimum content percentage thresholds have been streamlined and raised, strengthening the integrity of product claims.

Expanded Approval Process:

The approval process now encompasses all claim types, including those made by retailers, ensuring comprehensive oversight.

Centralized Claims Management System:

A centralized system has been implemented for claim approvals and maintenance, enhancing efficiency and accuracy.

It's important to note that, although we're excited to open this consultation, certain aspects of the policy are still in development. Preliminary considerations have been included, mainly covering the following areas:

Sourcing claims

Mass balance claims

Recognition claims

Commitment claims

Trademark and label use guidelines

As part of a comprehensive update to the claims and labeling system, the Materials Matter Standard will be accompanied by a new certification mark and label. However, these designs are still being crafted and are not part of the current draft policy.
